From Heartbreak to Hope

How DON’YA Ukraine’s Kitchen is Nourishing Souls and Serving Tradition

Kitchen is Nourishing Souls and Serving Tradition

When war forced thousands of Ukrainians to flee their homeland, the pain of leaving everything behind was unimaginable. But in Edmonton, one restaurant has turned that pain into purpose. DON’YA Ukraine’s Kitchen is more than a place to enjoy traditional Ukrainian food — it’s a testament to resilience, love, and the unbreakable spirit of a community.

A Refuge of Comfort and Connection

The idea for DON’YA Ukraine’s Kitchen began with a desire to help. Co-founders Jorgia Moore and her mother, Janice Krissa, were already supporting Ukrainian newcomers through a free store when they noticed a common struggle — finding meaningful employment. Language barriers and the trauma of war made it diffi cult for many to adjust. That’s when they realised food could off er both opportunity and healing.

At DON’YA, Ukrainian newcomers gather in a kitchen that feels like home. Here, they don’t have to explain their grief or hide their emotions. The laughter, the shared stories, and even the tears are met with understanding. It’s a space where culture is celebrated, friendships blossom, and hope is restored.

H3: Handcrafted Ukrainian Cuisine, Made with Love

Every dish at DON’YA Ukraine’s Kitchen tells a story. With hands that once held their children’s toys or tended gardens in Ukraine, employees now shape delicate perogies, roll sweet nalysnyky, and prepare steaming bowls of borscht. The flavours are authentic, the recipes are cherished, and every bite is a reminder of home.

Here’s what you can expect when you visit:

  1. Perogies – Soft dumplings stuff ed with savoury or sweet fillings, served with a dollop of sour cream and caramelised onions.
  2. Borshch – A vibrant beet soup, slow-cooked to perfection, offering both comfort and nourishment.
  3. Nalysnyky – Thin Ukrainian crêpes, elegantly rolled and filled with cottage cheese or fruit.
  4. Holubtsi – Tender cabbage rolls brimming with rice, vegetables, and meat, simmered in a rich tomato sauce.

More Than a Meal: A Mission of Empowerment

Beyond the kitchen, DON’YA Ukraine’s Kitchen is making a difference. Every purchase directly supports Ukrainian newcomers by providing stable employment, skill development, and a renewed sense of belonging. Many of the employees who once arrived seeking help now give back as volunteers and mentors.
“We’re not just making food,” says Moore. “We’re rebuilding lives, one plate at a time.”
