‘It’s a ghost town’: Concerns over lack of downtown vibrancy in Edmonton

Global News | March 2026

DON’YA Ukraine’s Kitchen went to Global News to sound the alarm about what weekend life looks like on Jasper Avenue right now — a ghost town. Co-founder Janice Krissa shared that the downtown location brought in just $71 on a recent Saturday, a number that speaks to a much bigger problem facing businesses in the core. She called on the city to take action on parking and safety to help bring people back.

The story prompted a response from Councillor Anne Stevenson, whose ward includes downtown, who told Global she is pushing for a dedicated web page on downtown parking and construction to make it easier for people to navigate the area. It’s a candid, honest conversation about the challenges of running a mission-driven business in a downtown that’s still finding its footing — and DON’YA isn’t waiting around for someone else to fix it.
