Janice Krissa-Moore started the Free Store for Ukrainian Newcomers in Edmonton as what she thought would be a two-week crisis response. A year later, she and her daughter Jorgia were running a store with a year-long lease, supporting over 400 families and up to 1,000 visitors per week, with donors reaching in from Nova Scotia to Vancouver. Out of the Free Store grew something even more remarkable: Ukraine’s Kitchen — the first commercial kitchen in Canada run solely by newcomers, serving dishes from Ukraine with 100% of profits going back to newcomer wages and Free Store operations. Krissa-Moore, a SAIT business grad and MBA holder, brought every skill she’d built over her career to make a real community impact: “I’ve had such a beautiful career. I’m using all the knowledge I gained at SAIT to make a positive impact.”
